Evidence-based Healthcare

The primary goal of every healthcare practitioner is to provide the best possible care for the patient. To achieve this, the practitioner needs to find, appraise and apply the best possible evidence from existing scientific research to inform his/her decisions and treatment choices. Evidence-based practice can help to determine the most appropriate care by combining clinical expertise with available best evidence, integrating the patient’s values, beliefs and preferences. Evidence-based practice is now recognized as the best model for medical care, and its growing application underscores the need for all healthcare providers to have adequate knowledge that will guide sound patient management.

Evidence-based healthcare delivery involves translating evidence into practice and ensuring that health practitioners, patients, family and carers are cognisant of and utilize research evidence to inform their health and their healthcare decision-making. Despite its relevance, evidence-based practice is scarcely adopted especially in low- and middle-income countries, mainly due to lack of capacity.

The Centre for Evidence Synthesis and Policy at the University of Ghana (CESP-UG) is committed to developing and supporting healthcare professionals in acquiring evidence-based practice competencies.

The Centre’s interest revolves around building critical mass of African scientists, university lecturers, health professionals and policy makers in the gold standard approaches and tools for advancing innovative, evidence-informed, demand-driven, and policy and context-relevant research to strengthen health systems and improving patient outcomes across countries in Africa.
